Alshaya and the MGRP recognise achievements of local youth

Kuwait, 24 July 2012: On 18 July 2012, M.H. Alshaya Co. hosted a ceremony at P.F. Chang’s, The Avenues, to mark the successful completion of its annual Retail Summer Programme. The initiative is the result of a partnership with Kuwait’s Manpower and Government Restructuring Programme (MGRP) and aims to introduce young people to work opportunities in the private sector through summer employment. Alshaya has been involved in the programme for 12 years and is its largest participant.

As a leading international retail franchiser in the Middle East, Alshaya was pleased to offer over 300 places to young Kuwaiti students this year, giving them first-hand experience of working for world-leading brands such as Mothercare, Debenhams and Starbucks. The participants’ in-store experience let them discover many different aspects of retail including product pricing, customer service and visual merchandising amongst others.

At the end of their four week programme all of the students were presented with Certificates of Achievement and the top 20 students attended a ‘Best of the Best’ recognition ceremony to receive trophies for their outstanding efforts. The event was attended by Tareq Al-Kandari, Head of the Students Summer Programme at the MGRP, Alshaya’s HR Management team and business directors from several of the company’s participating brands.

Each year, the number of students who apply to Alshaya’s programme steadily increases, reflecting the growing interest of Kuwaiti youth in discovering more about working in the retail sector. Today, retail is one of the Middle East’s largest private sector employer groups and it offers a wide range of career opportunities from operations through to management, often at an international level.

Commenting on the successful conclusion of the programme, Mohammed Alshaya, Executive Chairman of M.H. The Retail Summer Programme is one of a number of related initiatives created by Alshaya which are designed to introduce young Kuwaitis to a career in retail, and to develop those with talent.
